Writing Updates

Crisp Cold & Hiding Away

Many of you may be asking: “Where have YOU been?”

Ah yes, where have I been? Good question.

I am still here. Looking back I can’t believe my last post was in November. Yikes! My plan was to post a LOT more often. Life has given us a few hiccups which are stressful and my part time job as an editor has kept me away from my own blogging and my own writing. Between all that has been going on I haven’t been able to keep up with my work, hence, the amount of posts I’d like to make have diminished.

Christmas is almost here. I have Christmas music playing and I may wrap a few presents today. But then I have to get back to my editing job. I’m almost finished going through the book so my job is almost done. (sigh) That’s the way of it though. You have a project and can make a steady income for several months and then when the project is complete, it’s back to relying on one income, which, let’s face it, this day in age, is very hard to live on. But, looking at the bright side, I’ll be able to get back into my own writing. I’ve had ideas spinning in my head for months for like three different books. Question is: which one will I work on after this job is finished? Isn’t that always a stumbling block for us writers? Do you ever struggle with which project to work on? I’d be surprised if you didn’t. I swear if it’s not deciding which project to work on, it’s having chosen a book and once you’re into it, getting strong ideas for another book! Ugh! lol A writer’s mind is never quiet, always thinking, dreaming, scheming.

The three books I’m thinking of have to deal with the following topics: 1) discovery of having celiac disease (how it affected me, what had to change, and how I’m doing now), 2) discovery of having fibromyalgia (how it’s affected my life, my family, and how my faith has helped me deal with setbacks) 3) losing my mother at the age of 17 (how I was her caretaker, the effects it’s had, and how my faith helped me as a teen to get through that difficult time and I wish to inspire other teens who have lost parents.)

Okay, so there is a fourth about having PTSD, but, even if I wrote that one, I’m not sure about publishing it. So that one I’ll probably write for myself, at least for now.

I just have so many ideas and insights for those four topics and I feel being brave and sharing my experiences will encourage others.

That is my update for right now. I don’t have much to say about my writing because of the editing job, but I will keep you posted as this job winds down.

Have a great day!

Day and Night: A Collection of Nature Poetry Gets New Look!!

So the next book I was working on changing the look to is Day & Night: A Collection of Nature Poetry. The second cover looks far better than the first. A definite growth in understanding book cover design from when I first published my books. Well, you can see for yourself:

1st Book Cover
1st Book Cover

2nd cover
2nd cover

This is the back cover that goes with the new 2nd cover.
This is the back cover that goes with the new 2nd cover.

I have also made some improvements to the manuscript as well.

I hope you enjoy the newer cover and updated interior!

Off to work on the next book that needs updating.

I have Promo Codes for 5 FREE copies of the audio-book version of my poetry book “Day & Night: A Collection of Nature Poetry”.

What I have decided to do is ask one question a day and whoever is the first person to get the question right, will win a free promo code to my audio-book.

Look for the question coming up in my next post later today!

Bye Bye Smashwords

Okay, so I have been making some changes to where I have my books published. Smashwords….I gave the site a run for a year and made a whopping $7.46!!! Come on! What gives? So many places on the web I have read how great Smashwords is supposed to be at getting your books to Kobo, Apple, Sony, Barnes and Noble, etc. Sure it is great at doing that, but sales through those channels have not amounted to much. For the time, effort, and frustration I put into manuscripts for all their formatting rules…! Ugh I am taking the $7.46 and leaving! I am removing that extra frustration of formatting my books for Smashwords when I already have to do that for Kindle and CreateSpace. I can remove some stress and save a lot of time by cutting out Smashwords. I am not trying to badmouth the site, by all means if you are making it great on Smashwords, then great! It just wasn’t for me.

My books may be on Apple, Sony, B&N and a few other places for the next few weeks, but they will be disappearing soon. Sorry for anyone who uses something other than Kindle. I am thinking of offering my books for sale in these other formats directly from my own website. Something for me to think about.

General Updates

Book Formatting & Entry Into Contest

Tonight I am working on re-formatting a book for my friend (Phyllis Georgina Rose) who wants to put her book (The Rose Garden)  into the Writer’s Digest Self-Published Book Awards contest this year. When I am finished with her book, I will be making some minor adjustments to my book, The History of Sackets Harbor, New York, which I will be entering into the same contest. I am so excited about entering my book. I don’t usually enter into contests, but I found I wanted to try something different and exciting.

I’ll probably be spending the next several days working on these books, but I’d rather spend time and make them look as professional as I can. I know how professionalism make an impression on people and how they can tell if you really care about your work by how much time you spend tending to even the smallest detail. i

With that said, I best be off and get back to work. Have a good night!

Camp NaNoWriMo

August Camp NaNo Day 17

Okay, so today is day 17 of the August 2012 Camp NaNo. I have made some good headway on my book. I hope to work more on it tonight. I’m currently listening to the podcast Books on the Nightstand and it is so inspiring me to write. I also like to listen to the Creative Penn Podcast. I get both of these through iTunes and listen to them on my ipod nano or through iTunes. It depends on where I am writing either on the computer or with pen and paper.

So far my book has an epigraph, dedication, and at least two chapters. I hope to add to that tonight as long as my 3yr old goes to bed okay. She is a night owl so it’s hard. But, I really believe this book on my experience with depression and anxiety attacks and how I got through the bulk of it to that Mountain Top, and trying each day, to maintain where I am, will really help others. It’s not easy to write, I must say. Some times I just want to stop writing because emotions are just going crazy. This all started with death of my mother about 13 years ago, so even though time as gone by, the pain never completely goes away. There is always a little that lingers. A lot of this book so far is my journal entries I kept the four months I was caring for my mother. I have them down, but will have to go through them for spelling errors, etc. Not really looking forward to that, but I know it needs to be done.

Please, pray for me on writing this book. It is hard to do to to bring back some of this stuff. But even if one person benefits, it was all worth it.

Frustrated Mom Writer – Where To Publish

Okay, so it is after midnight where I am on the East Coast and I am frustrated. I do a search online to find places to publish articles and all I keep find are these places that don’t pay you up front for your work, but only earn money through revenue from ads. To me, I say the heck with that. I put my heart and soul into my work, I don’t want to be paid a mere pittance for the time and research I took to write something. People, make your writer’s happy and pay them up front for their work and don’t mean pay them $3, but pay them upwards of $15 or more depending on length and scope. It is only fair to the writer for the work they are doing to be paid properly. And then, say after a certain amount of time the rights return to the author and they are free to publish the article again. Some writers are just out their to make a name for themselves and not necessarily make any money. I am a stay at home mom, trying to find honest places that pay well enough to help me supplement my husband’s income.

And I have some book ideas. But self publishing and POD publishing are turning to be a crock so far. Traditional publishing just takes so long and when you need the money soon than later you really can’t afford to wait.

I am stuck. I feel like the world of really good publishing opportunities for the writer are dying. Writing is a passion for me and I have so much inside me I want to share. But with not knowing where to publish, my words will die with me.
